Tax year 2026-27 (FY 2026-27), Income-tax Act, 2025. Enter the tax you expect for the whole year after TDS and TCS.
An estimate. The department computes interest on the tax shown in your return and rounds the amounts, so its figure can differ by a few rupees. No interest arises on a shortfall caused by capital gains, dividends or new business income that could not be foreseen, if the tax on it is paid in the remaining instalments. Have a CA plan your instalments.
Quick answer
The next advance tax date is 15 December 2026, by which 75% of the year’s tax (after TDS) must have been paid. The last is 15 March 2027 for 100%, which is also the single date for presumptive taxpayers. Advance tax is due only if the year’s tax after TDS is ₹10,000 or more.
How the interest is worked out
Two sections of the Income-tax Act, 2025 apply, and both can run at once.
| Section | Formerly | When it applies | Interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| 425 | 234C | Paid less than the cumulative share by 15 June, 15 September, 15 December or 15 March | 3% of the shortfall for each of the first three dates; 1% for 15 March. No June interest if 12% was paid, no September interest if 36% was paid |
| 425(3) | 234C | Presumptive taxpayers under section 58 who pay less than 100% by 15 March | 1% of the shortfall |
| 424 | 234B | Advance tax paid by 31 March is less than 90% of the tax | 1% a month or part of a month on the unpaid tax, from 1 April until it is paid |
The 3% for an early instalment is the old three months at 1% a month, now written as one figure. Interest is simple, not compounded, and is not deductible as an expense.
Worked example
A freelancer expects ₹2,00,000 of tax for FY 2026-27 after TDS and pays nothing until filing in July 2027. Section 425: 3% of ₹30,000, ₹90,000 and ₹1,50,000, plus 1% of ₹2,00,000, which is ₹10,100. Section 424: 1% a month on ₹2,00,000 for April to July, ₹8,000. Total ₹18,100, about 9% of the tax. Paying ₹30,000, ₹60,000, ₹60,000 and ₹50,000 on the four dates costs nothing.
How to pay
On the income-tax e-filing portal use e-Pay Tax, choose Income Tax, the tax year, and Advance Tax as the type of payment, then pay by net banking, card or UPI. Keep the challan details for the return. Salaried people with other income can instead declare it to the employer, who then deducts the extra tax from salary. Our advance tax guide covers the rules in full, and the regime calculator estimates the year’s tax.
Frequently asked questions
What are the advance tax due dates for FY 2026-27?
15 June 2026 (15% of the year’s tax), 15 September 2026 (45% cumulative), 15 December 2026 (75%) and 15 March 2027 (100%). Presumptive taxpayers under section 58 (formerly 44AD and 44ADA) pay the whole amount by 15 March 2027.
Who has to pay advance tax?
Anyone whose tax for the year, after TDS and TCS, is ₹10,000 or more. A resident individual aged 60 or above with no income from business or profession is exempt.
How is interest on late advance tax calculated?
Section 425 (formerly 234C) charges 3% on the shortfall at each of the June, September and December dates and 1% at the March date; section 424 (formerly 234B) charges 1% a month from 1 April on the unpaid tax if less than 90% was paid by 31 March.
Is there interest if I paid 12% by June?
No. Section 425 charges no interest for the June instalment if at least 12% of the tax was paid by 15 June, and none for September if at least 36% was paid by 15 September.
Does tax paid between 16 and 31 March count as advance tax?
Yes. Any tax paid by 31 March counts as advance tax for the year, so it reduces interest under section 424, though the March instalment under section 425 is tested at 15 March.
