Udyam registration: how to register, download the certificate and keep it current
Udyam is the government’s MSME registration: free, permanent, Aadhaar-based and done in ten minutes on one portal. Most of the confusion is caused by paid websites that imitate it. Here is the real process and what the certificate is worth.

What Udyam is
Udyam registration is the online MSME registration run by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises since July 2020, replacing Udyog Aadhaar. It issues a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate, needs no documents to be uploaded, and has no government fee. The portal is udyamregistration.gov.in; any site that charges for registration or asks for a card payment is a private intermediary, not the ministry.
Any enterprise engaged in manufacturing, services or, since 2021, wholesale and retail trade can register: proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, companies, HUFs, co-operatives, trusts and societies. One registration per PAN, covering all units and activities.
The classification limits from 1 April 2025
| Category | Investment in plant, machinery or equipment | Annual turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to ₹2.5 crore | Up to ₹10 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹25 crore | Up to ₹100 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹125 crore | Up to ₹500 crore |
Both tests apply together and the higher of the two decides the category: an enterprise with ₹1 crore of machinery and ₹60 crore of turnover is small, not micro. Exports are excluded from turnover for classification. Investment and turnover are taken from the income-tax return and GST returns linked to the PAN, so the portal reclassifies automatically each year; an enterprise that crosses a limit keeps its old category until the end of the following financial year.
How to register, step by step
- On the Udyam portal choose the option for new entrepreneurs who are not yet registered.
- Enter the Aadhaar number and name of the proprietor, the managing partner, the karta, or an authorised signatory director for a company, and verify by OTP on the Aadhaar-linked mobile.
- Select the organisation type and enter the PAN of the enterprise (the proprietor’s own PAN for a proprietorship). GST registration is entered where the business is required to hold one.
- Fill in the enterprise name, the plant and office addresses, the bank account, the date of commencement, the number of employees, and the NIC codes for each activity. Several activities and several units can be listed under one registration.
- Investment and turnover are pulled from the ITR and GST records where they exist; a new enterprise declares them and the portal verifies them from the next year’s filings.
- Submit with a final OTP. The Udyam Registration Number is generated immediately and the certificate is emailed, usually within a day or two.
No documents are uploaded; everything is validated against Aadhaar, PAN, income-tax and GST databases. The most common failure is a PAN or GSTIN that does not match the enterprise type selected, or an Aadhaar that belongs to someone other than the proprietor or authorised person.
How to download, print or verify the certificate
On the portal’s print and verify menu choose the option to print the Udyam certificate, enter the Udyam Registration Number and the registered mobile number or email, and verify by OTP. The certificate downloads as a PDF with a QR code. Anyone can verify a certificate by number on the same menu without an OTP, which is how buyers and lenders check it.
The certificate has no expiry and is never renewed. If the number or the registered mobile is lost, the forgot-number option recovers it against the Aadhaar and PAN.
Updating, and the annual refresh
Log in with the Udyam number and Aadhaar OTP to update the address, activities, bank account, contact details or NIC codes at any time. Investment and turnover are refreshed automatically from the income-tax and GST filings each year; where those are not filed, the enterprise updates them itself. A registration left without an update or without the linked PAN and GST details can be marked suspended, which banks and tender portals will see.
Informal micro enterprises without a PAN, such as street vendors and small artisans, register through the Udyam Assist platform via their bank or lender, and get a certificate that counts for priority-sector lending.
What the certificate is worth
- Payment within 45 days. Buyers must pay a registered micro or small supplier within the agreed period or 45 days at most, failing which compound interest at three times the bank rate runs, recoverable through the MSME Samadhaan portal. Since FY 2023-24 buyers also lose the tax deduction for the expense until it is paid, under section 43B(h), which has made the certificate the strongest collection tool a small supplier has.
- Credit. Collateral-free loans under the credit guarantee scheme, priority-sector lending classification, and the TReDS invoice discounting platforms.
- Procurement. Exemption from earnest money and, on many tenders, from prior-turnover conditions; a share of central procurement reserved for micro and small enterprises; registration on the Government e-Marketplace.
- Fees and subsidies. Concessional trade mark and patent fees, reimbursement of ISO certification costs, capital and technology subsidies under state and central schemes, and electricity tariff concessions in some states.
- Licences. Udyam is accepted in place of separate registrations in several state schemes and is one of the documents that establishes a proprietorship for a bank account or a current account.
Mistakes that cost the benefits
Registering twice under two PANs, or once per unit, which the portal now rejects and which used to produce cancelled certificates. Choosing NIC codes for the activity you intend rather than the activity you do, which fails the ITR and GST cross-check. Using an employee’s Aadhaar because the proprietor’s mobile was not linked. Not entering the GSTIN when GST registration is mandatory, which suspends the registration. And paying a lookalike website ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 for a free form, which at best buys you a certificate you could have printed yourself.
Our Udyam service does the registration with the right NIC codes and classification for ₹399, mostly for businesses whose Aadhaar, PAN and GST records do not line up cleanly.
